31 Years Of Memories - What I remember about being 5

I keep saying that I would like to write something about my life for my kids.  My mother has told me plenty about her growing up but I don’t have it written down.  I’m an older Mum and I’m not sure I will have time to do it in the future.  I’m 44 now so I thought if I spent a day on each year and just write about things I remember from those years – I’d complete a reasonably big chunk of memories for them and possibly motivate myself to write more.

My parents were British and had both gone over to Canada separately.  My Mum had wanted to go to the states but apparently didn't have enough credentials to be accepted.  As a skilled stenographer, Canada was more than happy to have her.  She went over on the ten pound passage.

My dad was a navy man who had travelled the world after doing his national service.  He decided that Bournemouth was simply too small a place for him and he liked the anonymity that Canada provided.

So without further ado – What I remember about being 5

My family were living in Mississauga where they still live now.  We lived on W- Road in a semi-detached house.  There was my mum, my dad and older brother Bill who was twelve years older than me.  Due to this age gap – I rather suspected I was an accident and I was later to learn that my hunch was correct.

I had my own room which was upstairs next to my parents room.  They had wanted to move me downstairs but apparently I kicked up such a fuss that they decided to leave me in there.  I can remember my curtains which were yellow and had little girls with black hair all over them.  The carpet was a rather hideous shade of green.  I had some cheap furniture and a single bed.

My best friend at the time was Michelle who lived across the street.  She was a little younger than me but her mother Sandra was Irish and got along well with my mother who was Scottish.  I also had another friend – a little boy named Andrew who was the same age as me.  He was the youngest of six kids and he too I suspect was an “accident.”

Michelle’s mum didn’t work outside the home and it was always flawlessly spotless.  She made her own clothes and curtains.  Surprisingly she smoked which didn't fit the rest of her personality as it is a dirty habit but I never recall seeing any dirty ashtrays around their house.

Andrew’s house was far more fun to play in.  Apart from the lounge (which we called “the living room”) – his mother let us run riot all over the house and didn't tidy up after us so I much preferred going over there to play.  I remember melting crayons on the vapouriser! His dad also had a big green truck which we went driving in on a few occasions.  His dad was really lovely.  He once took us to the Ex and I can still remember how excited Andrew and I were when he pulled all the tickets out and showed us how many he had.  I remember wanting to go on the “Love Bug” ride with Andrew.  Not sure what my intentions were at the time!

His back garden had a low fence which was easy to climb.  So easy that I once followed my mother to the supermarket after having been left there to play while my Mum did the shopping.
I can remember starting school that year and getting my picture taken in a caravan outside the school in a yellow dress.  I can also remember the first day of school.  My teacher was Mrs. Lebfevre and I remember going in a curtsying to the class.

We all had little cubby holes to put our things in.  We had a nap every morning for twenty minutes and I can remember we all got changed together for p.e. classes.  I can remember some of the kids in my class.  Laurie Anderson was one of twins and she was very clever.  As was Janice Ting who was a little Asian girl.  Kuljit Plaha was a little Indian girl who was in my classes a lot over the years.  I didn’t make any life-long friends in my kindergarten class but I remember it as a happy time.

I can also remember that at some point that year, I went to England and Scotland for the first time.  I recall that my mother said that my Gran had been there for my birth.  I can remember staying at my Aunt Margaret’s house and playing with the little boy across the way.  I also remember going to my Aunt Rena’s house in Jersey and my grandfather getting drunk at the time.  I didn’t realise it at the time but he and my grandmother separated for about four years or so sometime in the seventies but I don’t know if they were together at this time or not.

We also saw my Uncle Roy and Aunt Marjorie who had a son David who gave me loads of toys.  They had a dog named Pip and I took it for a walk and let go of the lead.  I was not very popular that day!

I can remember visiting my great aunt Gertrude.  My brother at one point used to call me “young Gertie” but I don’t know if that had anything to do with Gertie or not.  I would have only met her the one time as she died about three years later.  We also saw my Gran during that trip although I think that was in Jersey.

That year for Christmas I got a Barbie Camper.  I still have it sitting in the attic of a friend’s house.  It was the coolest gift and I played with it for many years.  I think I also got a baby alive which you could feed and food came out the other end.  When I bought my own daughter one many years later – I threw out that bit!

Red Riding Hood And The Very Angry Ladybird

The last few weeks they have been celebrating National Book Week at Sweet-Pea's nursery.  It was only intended that the event last a week but so many kids were ill, they repeated the whole thing the second week!  That was really cool for me because I just loving dressing Sweet-Pea up and I can't wait until Smiler gets to participate!

This year, I bought Sweet-Pea a Red Riding Hood outfit and I gave her a copy of the book.  The real "Little Red Riding Hood."  Not the sanitized version they read at nursery but the proper one.  The Ladybird book.  Remember this?
Now I did have a think prior to giving Sweet-Pea the book because for those of you not familiar with the story - the wolf swallows both the Grandma and Red Riding Hood whole and they are rescued by Red Riding Hood's father who is a woodcutter and he kills the wolf with his axe.  A bit gory for a three year old to say the least.

That said, I'm pretty sure my mother read it to me when I was quite small.  I decided that if I explained to her that it was only a story and answered any questions she asked honestly that she would be fine and she has been.  It is a fine line to walk between protecting her from things that might legitimately upset her and from being able to distinguish between fact and fantasy.

I sent the book to nursery and her room acted it out with her as Red Riding Hood which she loved.  Here she is in her costume - complete with wolf:
The following week, we decided to go with our ladybird costume and they acted out "The Very Angry Ladybird."  Ironically enough - Sweet-Pea was going through much the same thing as the insect from the book.  She seemed to be picking arguments with us all week long and it was very very wearing!  However, you couldn't tell from the photos:
See what I mean - butter wouldn't melt you know?
Also they celebrated Saint Patrick's Day and she made a hat:

She also sang a leprechaun song to the tune of "I'm a little Teapot" that went:

"I'm a little leprechaun, small and green
The tiniest man you've ever seen
If you ever catch me I've been told
I'll give you my pot of gold"

They also had pyjama day and she wore her Peppa Pig pyjamas with matching socks ( please excuse the mess in the background)
I think it is fabulous that they encourage play-acting in children.  I remember when I was five, I was chosen to be the little Red Hen in the kindergarten play.  I suspect this had much to do with the fact that I was rather loud, bossy and precocious and they probably knew that people wouldn't struggle to hear me!

It was the story where the little Red Hen asks various animals for help in getting the ingredients for making bread who refuse only to turn up when it's ready to eat.  The play was a happy memory although I do recall my teacher gently chastising me in rehearsals for being a little too enthusiastic about denying the other animals the bread at the end!

Then of course, there are the photos I take randomly and I love this one:
What a great expression! Her Dad and I often wonder out loud what she'll be like when she's older.  Then I find myself praying for her future husband!

All kidding aside - she is such a lovely kid and we are so lucky to have her.

A Man On The Move

Smiler is growing up far too quickly.  I mean - just look at this:

Yes that is indeed his lovely first new tooth which came in February 5.  His second tooth came through on February 28 which was also the day he first crawled properly.  Not the commando crawling but proper lifting up his bum and crawling.  Then about four days later on March 1 - he decided that crawling was so yesterday and he would pull himself up to standing.  The following day, we had a cruiser on our hands!

It is lovely that he is now able to go where he wants...and it is awful that he is now able to go where he wants because it is almost always someplace I don't want him to go.  With his new skill and teeth coming in I feel like I have a small dog on my hands.  He is constantly pulling himself up around my legs.  He thinks our fingers are ideal teethers and I am continually throwing stuff up and out of the way so he won't get at it.

But he is just so cute
We also finally moved him into his own room.  I had intended to perhaps clean his room (formerly the guest bedroom) and clear out some of the junk beforehand but I didn't manage it.  We were interrupting his sleep as much as he was interrupting ours and one night I just realised that I was tired of creeping around in the dark trying not to disturb him.  I had planned on him being in there for at least six months and as Sweet-Pea had been in our room until she was about eight or so months old, I thought it was a good time for him to go.  Also, I'll be returning to work in June and I wanted him to be well and truly used to his own room well before I headed back.

All said and done it is working well.   This is him the day we moved the cot out.  We also had to lower the cot as he could now pull himself up.
Tomorrow, we will be completing another milestone.  We'll be buying him his first pair of shoes!  He is desperate to walk outside but I can't let him do it in his socks!

So I'll sign off with one last photo.  My little ginger boy....sniff....

Butterfly Wings And Other Things...

Sweet-Pea has had an exciting few weeks.  The Friday of half-term she saw her boyfriend Sammy and got her face painted.  I was a bit worried as to how that would go as she had never had her face painted before but she just loved it!  Here is the final result:
Here she is getting it done - first she patiently waits...
Then we start on the wings...
Finished!
Now her boyfriend Sammy got his face painted as well.  He is currently into Superheroes so he got his face painted like Spiderman.  This I might add was taken before Sammy panicked thinking that it was permanent at which point he tried to rub it off his face!
Another big exciting thing that happened was that Sweet-Pea met a CBeebies television presenter.  Over here, the CBeebies channel is for under fives and has no commercials.  Claire likes many of the programs that appear on this channel such as "Charlie and Lola," "Tweenies", "Postman Pat" and "Bob The Builder" to name a few.  Sweet-Pea met Katy from the show "I Can Cook."

My friend Lynn babysits Sweet-Pea and Smiler once a week while Hubby and I go out to eat a meal in peace and as it happens - she knows Katy!  We had watched the last series of the show which is really good.  Sweet-Pea loves to help me cook and loves all the songs that Katy sings and all the actions i.e. kids are encouraged to pretend they are mixing something or to spring up and rise like baking powder.  We have the cookbook that they put out and have made a few recipes from it.  Lynn knew how much Sweet-Pea liked the show so she made arrangements for Katy to come around and meet her.

Well - when Auntie Lynn opened the door and Katy was stood there, Sweet-Pea for once was speechless!  As Lynn said later "Well - if Brad Pitt walked through your door - you probably wouldn't believe it was actually him would you?"  However, Katy is a really lovely girl and put Sweet-Pea at ease right away and we had a really nice visit.  I learned a bit about how a television series was made and she told us a bit about her life which was really interesting.  She and Sweet-Pea had a lovely play and I took a few photos...

Then - to top off the evening, it was my step-daughter's birthday!  She had requested a "Hello Kitty" cake which I had spent much of the previous day making and I thought it turned out pretty good.

Due to the fact it was her birthday and she was about to devour almost an entire cake - she let me take a photo of her with Sweet-Pea!  A rare honour!
I have more Smiler-related news but it's been almost three weeks since I posted so at the moment, I'll end off with this. I wish I could be disciplined to write every day but with two small kiddies in the house and a part-time teenager - there are only so many hours in the day to get things done!

Enough already - I'm pressing the Post button!

The Year of The Pig

Well after last week's Burns night celebrations at nursery, she comes home telling me something about her being a pig.  Wasn't sure where that came from but a chance comment about what Chinese people eat (rice) and what they eat with (chopsticks) gave the game away.  Turns out that the nursery also celebrates Chinese New Year!

Once we explained what it was all about, she then wanted to know what animal every member of our family was.  So hubby got on the internet and dutifully looked up every member of our family.  She was delighted to know that Smiler is a Tiger.

Other animal news.  It came to our attention that the lovely Happyland farm that my Aunt Rena and Uncle Greg gave to the kids does not have a pig despite having a pig noise button on top of the house.  I had heard that Early Learning Centre had stopped putting the pigs in the farm because they didn't want to offend other religions.

While I thought the spirit of being inclusive was nice, I did think it was a bit silly that they had the pig shed, the pig noise and no pig.  Hubby got on the internet and found out that pigs were being provided free of charge to anyone who complained.  So Sweet-Pea got a lovely pig in the post that she was delighted with and our farm finally got the missing component.

I did say that I would update on my resolutions. My first resolution to be more mindful of our spending has gone really well.  We are really trying very hard not to overspend and stick to a budget and that seems to have worked.

The thyroid pill taking has gone not too badly but room for improvement.  I have missed the odd day so I guess technically I broke my resolution but I think I have been more consistent in taking them generally which is good.

The gym has been great.  This is the first week that I have not been at all.  We had a week between Smiler recovering from man-flu before he came down with another bout.  Fortunately, this bout was not so long but this time I fell sick and I haven't had the energy to do much of anything other that reach for the remote control and make cups of tea.

The desk is a mess.  Enough said.  Big fat "F" for failure on that one.

I have tried to spend a bit more time with hubby and kids.  We have had some nice walks but for the most part it has been so miserable out that our time together has mostly been indoors.

Smiler and I have been visiting some friends.  This is Smiler and I with my friend Helen and her son James:

This is smiler with his friend Anna
This is Smiler practicing his new skill - sitting!  He also got his first tooth on February 5 but you can't see it in these photos.

Update: I started writing this two weeks ago when Smiler was just getting over his man-flu.  He has had two more bouts of it since then so I have been too exhausted to post!  We've been fever free since today so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Man-Flu and Monsters

My poor little Smiler has Man-Flu so we've been hanging about in our bathrobe and slippers.
It all kicked off last Sunday night at around 3:00 AM and I haven't had more than two hours of uninterrupted sleep since.

He apparently has a virus.  I took him to the doctor on Tuesday and today and they said his ears, throat and chest were clear.  He hardly slept at all last night and had a raging fever to boot.  I had a hard time believing that there wasn't an infection.

Sweet-Pea gave us a good laugh this week.  She came home saying that it was Robert's birthday and that she and Sammy had sung him "Happy Birthday."  I asked who Robert was and she said "Robbie Burns" she said excitedly "and he has a night!"  But of course - Burns night!

I told her that Grannie (my mother) was Scottish just like Robbie Burns and she said, "Did you know there are monsters in Scotland?"  Really?  "They're called 'Ness'."  Ah - the Loch Ness monster!

I was really pleased that they did some Scottish heritage and I am thinking of asking them to celebrate the Canadian Independance day.  Sweet-Pea is half-Canadian and I'd like her to know a bit more about Canada and its customs.  It won't mean much to her now but will do at a future time hopefully.

Smiler's First Kiss

My little man is growing up fast.  He is already rolling over, and eating solid food and flirting with the girls!
We had a gathering of my antenatal group at my friend Ally's house and all the babies were playing on a blanket surrounded by cushions.  Smiler was next to Ally's daughter Clara and they were quite taken with each other.  I got out my camera just in time to capture this:
Aren't they cute?  What a lucky boy to have such a pretty girl give him his first kiss!

Ally had made a lovely sensory play area with plenty of noisy textured objects that the babies just loved.  I couldn't believe how much they had all changed since they were born.

This is Jake sitting up with a big smile and lovely new shoes on.  He was the oldest of the babies there.
This is Olivia who despite her jetlag (they just returned from holiday) was anything but tired!
Thomas looking very cute in his tractor overalls.
This was Evie with her Mum Fiona.  I tried very hard to get her to look at me but she was having none of it!
And not forgetting the lovely Clara...
Honestly - they were all so incredibly cute I could have photographed them all afternoon.  Here they are playing together.
We also managed a group shot of all of them which wasn't easy.  Jenny starting ringing a bell making them look up while the rest of us snapped photos.  This was the best of the ones I took
It was so nice to see everyone again as we hadn't met up in a while.  It is great to be able to swap stories with the other Mummies and compare notes.  Teething and weaning are the topics of the moment as they are all at that stage.  Some have a tooth (or two) and all of them are starting to eat solids.

I am trying not to get too stressed about food this time around.  With Sweet-Pea, I remember getting very frustrated when she wouldn't eat my lovingly prepared pureed vegetables and fruit.  That said, once she was able to take lumpier food, she ate more regularly.  Once she went to nursery, she had a hot meal mid-day so if she didn't eat a load of dinner, I knew she had been fed well earlier and didn't worry about it.

As for teeth, poor Smiler has a telltale lump where I suspect his first tooth is planning to appear.  Sweet-Pea got her first tooth at seven and a half months so if Smiler follows suit - I should be having a rough few weeks coming up!

But in this picture - he isn't thinking about his teeth.  He's just thinking about the pretty girl who gave him his first kiss.
